During the summer of 2018, I worked at a KinderCare Daycare Center in my hometown of Glastonbury, CT. I was an Assistant Teacher working with children 2-12, with a focus on sensorimotor, social, reading skills. While covering lunch breaks, I would switch from classroom to classroom by the hour, and it was sometimes challenging but fun to think on my feed and learn what the students had done before I had arrived.
I learned that my favorite group to work with was the kindergarten students (5 years and up), as they are older children, yet still young — they still may need repeated reminders of the classroom rules and expectations. During writing or arts activities, I would chat with them about what TV shows and books that they liked, and learn about what it’s like to be them. I would sit down with them and help the students think about ideas of what to draw or create, and I could give them guided learning questions as they completed the activity.
